Smooth ceilings and level-5 walls

A lot of homes from past decades still carry popcorn ceilings, and taking them down is one of the quickest ways to update a room. It is a dusty job, so the room is masked off first. The popcorn comes down, the ceiling is skimmed smooth or re-textured, then sanded flat and ready for paint.

Open floor plans and big windows put a lot of light across walls and ceilings at a low angle. That is the light that finds a bad joint. Where a room needs it, a level-5 skim coat over the whole surface makes the wall read as one flat plane.
